Below shows the top 20 most popular programmes that were shown on channel 4 from the 17th to the 23rd of October 2016. We our planning on showing our programme at 9pm on Channel 4 at he weekend.
Channel 4 – 19th – 25th September 2015
Channel 4 – 22nd – 28th August 2016
Channel 4 – 25th – 31st July 2016
I have been researching into the channel 4 tv giude, more specifically at what programmes are usually aired at 9pm, this is because for our tv show ‘The Ozzie Gilbert Show’ we aim to air this at 9pm on the weekend. Continuing with the research that I have completed I have noticed that there is a similar trend to what is shown at that time, the 3 most popular tv programmes were, ‘8 out of 10 cats does countdown’, ’24 Hours in A&E’ and ‘The Undateables’. These are all programmes that everybody has heard of and for that reason are extremely popular with the audience, we knew that as a group if we were to rival this slot we would need to plan and execute a very competitive programme.
Before we even try to create our own tv programme we knew weneeded to start where it is most important, and that is the audience. Without creating something for an audience who is going to watch it? I have started by trying to narrow my audience as best I can, first of all I know that the 3 tv programmes that I previously listed are popular with both male and females and given the selected slot time they are directed towards anyone above the age of 16. This is because although ’24 Hours in A&E’ can be quite graphic, and ‘8 Out of 10 Cats does Countdown’ can be quite rude they are all really interseting programmes that really importently engage the audience. That is exactly what we have to aim for when creating our tv show.
The 9m slot that we have chosen to air our show is one of the most popular slots on tv, especially for channel 4. This has been home to the most well known programmes on channel 4, in the last 12 months this slot has regularly shown programmes such as ‘GoggleBox’, ‘8 out of 10 Cats does Countdown’, ’24 Hours in A&E’, ‘First Dates’, ‘Grand Designs’ and ‘Location Location Location’. These programmes are all similar in ways, for example the basic idea of each one of these are quite simple, filming life inside a hospital, filming people watch tv, and filming people on a first date. But it doesn’t matter that these programmes are simple because they are created in such a way that so many people find them interesting enough to watch week in week out.
